Like many others, I partly self-funded the LPC and graduated with no TC secured. I was working at The Law Society in Chancery Lane and really enjoyed my work there but reality is, I wanted to get more private practice experience and I was still a TC away from qualifying.
I knew that in addition to achieving great results (check out my LPC Distinction post here), there was much more I had to do - I spent a lot of time networking at various law fairs and law firms, I was part of several representative bodies, I started writing for The Student Lawyer and I was a mentor to an undergraduate student!
But is this enough?!?! There is no definitive answer but what I can tell you is there is no magic formula - be yourself and present the best version of you.
These are my tips on how to secure a paralegal role:
Tidy up your CV and present the BEST you've got - your CV is you on a paper - you want to come across as a diligent, knowledgeable and proactive individual. Read every single line on your CV and think about whether it plays a role in being on that paper. When you then find a job you want to apply to, look at the job description and tailor your CV to the role. Try to be adaptable and think about how you can achieve what they are looking for using an alternative experience, even if it is not legal!
Use a recruitment agency - I have always recommended this. Recruiters know the market (should know!) and they are there to help you. Be approachable, connect with people on Linkedin, send a message to various recruiters. Before they think about whether you meet the requirements, they will think about whether they like you as a person!
Do your research - like any job application, research is vital. If you have no previous paralegal experience, think about the transferable skills you have which will be attractive to the organisation - can you demonstrate team work, attention to detail, good written and verbal communication, thinking outside the box and someone who takes initiative. At times, the organisation is not looking for someone who CAN do it but rather someone who is WILLING to do it. Your attitude says a lot about who you are!
YOU CAN DO IT - It's easier than you think! If you want it, your passion and enthusiasm will takeover and it will be seen just how much you want it. Stop worrying about whether you are good enough or if you have the requisite experience, you do you and what is meant for you will be!
