During the Training Contract (TC), trainees need to develop and apply practice skills which will be used as a qualified solicitor. This is why we keep a Training Diary/Record (I have a post dedicated on this with a template).
To touch upon a few of these skills:
Advocacy and oral presentation - communication skills of an advocate, techniques and tactics of examination, preparing and identifying legal principles, dealing with witnesses appropriately, helping with pre-trial procedure and trial
Dispute Resolution - obtaining evidence, taking careful instructions, assessing and managing risk, drafting papers for contentious matters
Communication skills - ensuring communication meets intended objective, using clear and succinct language, drafting letters and internal notes, minute keeping
Drafting - this covers a variety from drafting witness statements, wills, trust deeds to leases, contracts, instructions to counsel
Legal research - this is at the core of tasks - I find myself more often than not undertaking research to identify source of law, interpreting the results to the matter
Managing your work - learning to plan and prioritise, managing work and projects, meeting timescales and keeping people informed
